Some part of my team has a fear from time to time that some global service will come and eat us all. This is the fear of the helmsman, followed by a hurricane. His first question was: “Why can’t Yandex copy your technologies?”And really — why? After all, formally, we have not made any such fantastically breakthrough technologies.
I’m not immediately able to answer this question, but in the end, figured it out for myself: because Yandex and Google is the IT company of the pure. And we create an IT-product, but as a business we are not exactly an IT-company. We don’t just make money with algorithms. We work with our hands. Our entire business is built on people management. And this is our core competence. This, as a rule, is not in IT-companies.
Our biggest competitor is not the maps, but the big search. In fact, we provide people with a search engine that works offline only in the local search segment. That is, not in the global world and not in the global web, namely local search : what is located around me, what I want to get?
There is a joke: Soviet education is nothing about everything. And Western — all about anything. Here we are. Search engines aren’t enough about everything. And we are very deep, but only in a small segment. In order for them to catch up with us here, they need to make all of our technological iceberg, which is not visible from the outside. And they’re too big for that.
At one time the world was in a panic mood that the big search would eat everything. Nothing like that! Passed 2-3 years local search products again flooded the hill. And we are naturally moving from a simple guide to a more modern sphere — to specific services. For example, we can now call a taxi. Now Gett and other services work with us and receive a decent number of orders from our users. We have a Delivery club — its advertising hangs, and right there through it it it is possible to order food. Excellent results are given by partnership with the Pro.ru. Through them you can make an appointment with a doctor. This model of direct services we continue to develop, some things we will do ourselves.
Our business is just a collection of well-tuned elements. It all rests on the “last mile” of quality and effort. Yes, the giants are trying to copy us. But what is copying? You can repeat everything in great detail, but you have to reach the level of the master, and then go further if the master stopped. And if the master does not stop, you will always repeat after him.
Therefore, we can be knocked out of the market only in one case — if we ourselves stop in development. But until that happens, we will always be one step ahead. Or at least half a step.
